Kingston University Rocket Propulsion Group has recently tested a vortex cooled combustion chamber rocket engine. Using Perspex as the combustion chamber material, the vortex of the combustion contains the heat and keeps the walls from melting.
This idea has been successfully tested by Orbitec and flew on a Garvey Spacecraft launch vehicle in 2012.
